The Future of Litter Reform
Introducing Walking For Rochester’s Litter Elimination System
Modernizing Litter Reform
The LES
What is the Litter Elimination System (LES)? It is a 6 step loop designed to identify, eliminate and track litter. The system is comprised of 3 core tools: a unified CRM, the Walking For Rochester mobile app, and our very own GIS dashboard. All litter activity tracked in the Walking For Rochester mobile app generates data that would otherwise not be recorded, giving us a clear pulse of the litter situation across Rochester, NY.

The GIS Dashboard
This GIS dashboard is a live, map-based intelligence system that visualizes litter activity across Rochester. It combines verified litter removal data, community litter reports, and additional public data layers to identify hotspots and patterns. The dashboard supports strategic placement of cleanups, improves resource allocation, and modernizes how the city tracks and responds to litter.
All activity together
Whether you participate in Walking For Rochester cleanups, another organization’s cleanup, or clean up on your own, you should log your work through the app.

The Psychology of Litter
Your environment plays a key role in how you interact with it. An area that already has litter is more likely to be littered again, while an area without litter is far less likely to be littered. Clean areas stay clean, while littered areas attract more litter.

Accountability
This is just the beginning
For the first time, we can study litter as a real, measurable behavior across the city. As reports and cleanup logs fill the system, patterns will emerge showing where litter forms, how it spreads, and what stops it. The future holds a city that doesn’t just react to litter, but understands it and eliminates it with precision.
